Norway’s maritime history dates back many thousands of years and the coastline and the internal waterways of Norway provide fascinating opportunities for underwater archaeology exploration. Shipwrecks dating to the myriad eras of history have been discovered; however, interesting avenues for continued study abound, such as the development of vessels-types distinctive of Norway. Since 2004, ProMare has been collaborating with Norwegian museums, universities and archaeologists to develop a consistent program of research to explore past Norwegian maritime activities and study the archaeological remains of historical and pre-historical vessels in Norwegian waters.
