The month of June 2008 has seen the beginning of the first season of collaboration between the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici del Lazio and ProMare, under the direction and scientific supervision of Dr. Annalisa Zarattini. The area of intervention chosen is the island of Ventotene, a small islet of only 1.3 Km2 in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea, 45 km offshore the Italian mainland.

The collaboration between ProMare and the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici del Lazio aims to open a new season of archaeological investigations in Ventotene, making of the local archaeological museum an active center of study for international scholars. A long-term program of constant investigations of the archaeological land sites, jointly with new campaigns of underwater mapping and surveys, and conservation and restoration of the artifacts found above and under water, will provide the best opportunity to study thoroughly the history of Ventotene and the Pontine. Due indeed to Ventotene’s small size and location in the hearth of the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is impossible to study its millenary history drawing a sharp line between terrestrial and marine archaeology.
